HISTORY
The Research/Intelligence Analyst Program (R/IAP), as the Institute for Intelligence Studies was previously known, was approved in February 1992 as a concentration within a History major. Its goal, which is unchanged, is to produce a graduate who is qualified to be an entry-level intelligence analyst for the government and the private sector. The program started the following September with fourteen students and twelve years later, it has 166 students from fourteen states and four foreign countries. Its 105 graduates are spread throughout premier government agencies and Fortune 500 corporations.
In 1995 a prototype for a masters program in intelligence was initiated based on student pressure to create such a program. This effort capitalized on the college's successful Administration of Justice graduate program by creating an intelligence concentration therein. Although largely unpublicized, it has been eminently successful, both attracting students from throughout the world and being attractive to employers. This masters program graduated 30 students. In 2003 a new graduate program was developed in Applied Intelligence to start in the spring of 2003. The Masters of Science degree in Applied Intelligence will be the world's first broad-based non-governmental intelligence masters. It is anticipated that within five years R/IAP and the new masters program will draw 300 quality students to Mercyhurst College, becoming one of the school's largest programs. STATS
